New Bathroom Floors

 | 2 min

One of the problems we noticed after we’d moved into this apartment, was that the tiles in the wet areas hadn’t been laid properly. Both bathrooms are completely tiled (floors and to 2 metres up the wall) and have two drains in them.

shower tap

The shower has a tap that you can run to either fill a bucket or wash your feet. Washing your feet is necessary pretty much every time you come in from outside, even if you had shoes on!

There is a lever you turn to the right if you want the taps to control the showerhead above (not shown), or to the left if you want the water to come out the spout beneath. If the lever is vertical, the water is off in both places.

There is also another tap next to the toilet which you can use to attach a hand sprayer or bum washer and to clean the floor.

wet broom

Cleaning is pretty simple – you just run some water and use your feet or a wet broom to send the water towards the drains.

Our problem was that the floor level wasn’t correct and instead of the drains being in the lowest corners of the bathroom, they were actually in the highest. So all we ended up with was water all over the floor that didn’t drain away. Eventually, we got the workers back to re-do it.

First, they had to take out the toilet & sink, then bust up all the existing tiles, then remove them all:

Then finally, they added a bit more sand and cement and laid some nice new tiles:

This picture is actually of the other bathroom.

Once the put the toilet back in the master bedroom, I couldn’t get a good photo of the tiles in there, but they are the same in both bathrooms now. Only the wall colour is different.

This bathroom now has a single drain in the far left corner (hidden by the sink) and all the water drains into it nicely. There used to be a second drain just under the sink, but we didn’t need that anymore so had it removed.
