Religion and personal responsibility

 | 2 min

Religion seems to be a convienient way of avoiding personal responsibility.

It doesn't matter much what I do, as long as I love Jesus I'll end up with god in heaven.

There's no point trying to save the planet, it's only going to get destroyed during armageddon and I'll have been raptured off the planet by then anyway.

No need to do anything to try and solve the world's problems, I'll just pray for god to make it better.

By saying 'it's god's will', or worse, 'it's the work of the devil', you ignore the fact that it's a human problem. Any by looking in the wrong direction for the problem, you will never see the solution. You decide to pray to god, instead of looking at what is wrong with society that allowed this to happen, and figuring out how to change the society so that stuff doesn't happen again.

For instance, our current population is not sustainable on this planet. Never mind the rate of population growth, our current population is not sustainable. We do currently produce enough food to feed everyone if it is redistributed property. But not all of that current food production is sustainable. Much of it is drawing down accumulated soil fertitiltiy that will take years to replace. We can't even keep up this level of food production.

But you know what, don't worry about it, no need to be concerned. God said that everything was ours for the taking, so that's what we are doing. I'm sure he'll rapture us all before the resources run out. Hopefully you'll be dead before it becomes an issue and it's only your descendents who will suffer because you looked the other way. Pity that didn't work so well for those africans you converted.

We are all in this together. we are all on this planet together. The only way out is permanently. So whatever we fucked up because we didn't know better .. we have to put it right.
